Martinien Afangbedji is an award-winning language specialist whose work sits at the meeting point of legal translation, institutional communication and emerging language technology. A certified Translation Project Manager and Machine Translation Post-Editor (RWS), he pairs the precision of a legal linguist with a clear-eyed view of how technology is reshaping the profession.
Based in Accra, Ghana, he works as a translation consultant to multilateral development institutions and has, over close to a decade, supported intergovernmental and international organisations across the continent. He has also taught the next generation of professionals at the Regional Maritime University in Ghana.
The result is a practical, grounded perspective — earned in the room, across legal and institutional translation in African contexts, and brought to every conversation about language, law and the technologies now changing how both move across borders.

i Process
Each project starts with its purpose and audience. Scope, format and timeline are agreed up front; I then translate, self-revise and quality-check before anything reaches you — publication-ready, without a second pass.
ii Quality assurance
Every text is checked for terminology, consistency and register against established institutional standards. As a self-revising translator, I deliver work to the standard that needs no second reviser.
iii Confidentiality & data
Your documents are confidential by default, and I work under NDA whenever required. Files are handled on privately hosted, access-controlled systems, with every tool chosen with data protection in mind and aligned to internationally accepted standards.
iv Turnaround
Standard turnaround is comfortable and predictable, and tighter deadlines are usually possible. We confirm timing together before work begins — so there are no surprises on either side.
A modern toolkit, under expert control
I work fluently with the field's best technology — Trados Studio, memoQ, Phrase and SmartCat, alongside DeepL and AI systems including Claude and Gemini — and I use it on my own terms. The tools handle volume and consistency; the judgement, legal precision and nuance remain human. That balance is what keeps the work both fast and faithful.

Research The African linguistic landscape
Beyond client work, I research how meaning, law and institutional concepts travel across languages — and where they resist translation altogether. A particular focus is lexical gaps and untranslatability in West African languages: the points where one language has no single word for another's concept, and what those gaps reveal about how legal and cultural frameworks move between societies.

I speak and lead workshops on what it really takes to thrive as a language professional in multicultural international organisations — and on the practical realities of working alongside new translation technologies.
Teaching Training the next generation
I have taught at the Regional Maritime University in Ghana, working with early- to mid-career translators and language professionals as they build their footing in international and institutional work.
